Capturing Mark Appleyard’s Legendary 360 Flip – Behind the Shot
Take a trip back in time to 2011, to an Element Skate Demo at the legendary TAZ Skatepark in Montreal. Watch as Mark Appleyard sends it, while Nyjah Huston, the man in red, watches from the sidelines due to a foot injury. In this video, I'm sharing one of my all-time favorite skateboard shots. This time, I had my GoPro with me—a rarity since I'm usually the one behind the camera. A pouch I carried slightly got in the way, but that's just part of the journey. For years, I've collected small snippets of videos but never got around to doing anything with them due to a lack of context. Now, I've pieced them together, providing narration and context, to give you an insight into the making of that amazing shot. The gear I used for this shoot included the film camera Canon EOS 1, my reliable Canon 40D, a Samyang 8mm fisheye, and a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8. To complement this setup, I used an affordable remote flash trigger with a Canon speedlight.
